The school’s spring concerts will take place at Grafarvogur Church this Saturday, May 9, at 11:00, 12:30, and 14:00. The program will feature a variety of ensemble pieces that students have worked on throughout the year, as well as solo performances.
During the school year, 22 studio concerts were held, and students performed at 50 concerts or events on various occasions. These included Unglist – the Youth Arts Festival, the Fossvogsskóli Christmas Event, the Reading Competition, and most recently Nótan, which was held at Reykjavík City Hall. An impressive number of people made their way downtown to attend Nótan and learn about the work of the music schools.
The school also participated in Söngvavor at the Children’s Culture Festival in Harpa, where music school ensembles accompanied singing by preschool children. In total, around 1,400 preschoolers and music students performed on the Eldborg stage at Harpa. During the preparation period, preschool children visited the music school, rehearsed with the school’s ensembles, and were introduced to different instruments. This year featured songs by Dr. Gunni, which were very well received.
In the autumn term, improvisation workshops were held, and in the spring term, a chamber music week took place, where students were invited to attend each other’s lessons and experiment with ensemble playing and arranging. These ensemble projects were later presented at studio concerts, at Nótan, and at the spring concerts.
All of these events require extensive preparation and organization, and both teachers and parents deserve great credit. The results speak for themselves: this winter we reached a record number of graded exams, with 8 students taking Miðstig exams and 18 taking Grunnstig exams, for a total of 26 level exams. Each Grunnstig exam represents approximately seven years of study, and each Miðstig exam at least two additional years. Altogether, these 26 exams can be said to represent roughly 198 years of study.
We are grateful for the excellent collaboration this winter with numerous primary schools, Grafarvogskirkja, Bústaðakirkja, the Children’s Culture Festival, Tónskóli Sigursveins, Tónmenntaskóli Reykjavíkur, Allegro Suzukitónlistarskóli, Tónskóli Eddu Borg and the cultural centers in Spöng and Úlfarsárdalur.
Looking ahead, the school has many concerts coming up. The preschool department will perform at spring festivals in their respective neighborhoods, and there will also be numerous concerts held in the school’s concert hall.
